Marine Biology with Dr. McDonald
This fall, Explorers is thrilled to introduce a brand-new program in partnership with Dr. Lisa McDonald: Marine Biology.
A Note from Dr. McDonald
*“This fall semester, I invite you to join me and other scientists as we explore the world around us and how ecosystems interact with one another. Together, we will study the Hudson River ecosystem and investigate the decline of the Eastern Oyster, a challenge facing New York City and other coastal American cities.
This decline has been linked to extreme weather cycles driven by climate change and global warming, which also impact other Hudson River species such as fish. To address this, we’ll use IDEO’s Design Thinking Approach (IDTA). This process not only helps students define problems clearly but also empowers them to develop innovative solutions by asking key questions: Why does this matter? How are other cities and countries addressing this issue? How can harvesting efforts be sustained?
Through brainstorming and collaboration, students will grow into confident, capable learners. They’ll engage in deeper inquiry, strengthen analytical and creative thinking skills, and take more responsibility for their learning and growth. With opportunities for leadership and self-expression, students will be well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”*
